Outlander Christmas Ornament #yourstampinscrapbooker

This post is dedicated to all my Sassenach Sisters all over the world!

Well, it had to be done… yes, I had to make an Outlander ornament for my tree!! I am a part of an Outlander craft club online and they had an ornament exchange for the holidays, however, I did not partake as I felt I just had too much on my plate and couldn’t commit.  That being said, I wish I had since it would have spurred me to get it done… Here is the newest addition to our tree!  I used the Outlander stamp set from Kindred StampsClick here for my previous post about my excitement in having discovered these stamps!! Thank you to all my Sassenach Sisters all over the world for sharing the Outlander love online so I could discover these stamps and all the Outlander creative ideas that are out there! I just realized that I discovered these stamps shortly before season 3 started and here I am sharing them again as season 3 has finished…. #droughtlander will be bearable for me having found these 2 cuties to create with!! Thank you Kindred Stamps!

I still have plans for some Outlander creations using some clear Christmas balls that I have to dig out tomorrow and the girls and I can play!  Life has been so super crazy, I just haven’t been able to make the time to be creative… it seems there is just always something else and it doesn’t help that I’ve been super addicted to #Vikings, in addition to my weekly #Outlander Sunday nights, which, sadly have come to an end…I haven’t even had time to color in my new #Outlander colouring book my family got me for my birthday! (You know it’s bad when…) 😉

I’m loving the little Sassenach on the sides! Super cute, right?

Watermarked2(2017-12-12-2123)

This is only the beginning of the fun that can be had with this set and I plan to make many more to share with special Outlander fan friends all over the world… the challenge will be finding more of these ceramic ornaments to stamp on… I better to get Michael’s and see what’s left!!

For all your Stampin UP needs, shop here!!

Happy Holidays!!

#GreatCanadianScrapbookCarnival was amazing! #shoptilyoudrop scrapbook style! @CSMscrapbooker

IMG_4640.JPG

This year’s theme was Canada 150 and it was absolutely perfect!  This 2 day crop is a favourite of our group for many reasons.  The shopping, socializing, scrapbooking…and the shopping! When that many scrapbook vendors are brought together in one place, it can be very dangerous for us lovers of all things scrapbooking!! I went thinking, I don’t “need” anything… hahahahaha

First of all, we get a goodie bag of surprises!  There is a minimal registration bag and then a larger “embellished” bag, if you so desire the element of surprise!! I went for the cheaper bag and here is a pic of some of the fun goodies I came home with!! Disclaimer: There are a few extra items I got that were given to me by other croppers that were not in the cheaper bag.

Watermarked(2017-09-29-1557).jpg

Big thank yous were sent out to all the amazing sponsors of the event that support each year!! Avery Elle, KaiserCraft, Scrapbook Adhesives, Spellbinders and more…

Here is some of the new goodies I bought: (I posted a Facebook Live this morning where I walked through it all briefly, check out the video here).

Being as I went to scrapbook our Canada 150 celebrations (which I never did get done) I was falling in love with more and more of the Canadian themed papers and stamps.  Earlier this year I bought the Canada 150 stamp from Close to My Heart, so I was prepared for my layout, and had gathered some gorgeous papers along the way, but of course, when you come across the newest suppliers in town called Wild Whisper Designs, who can resist these?

The Wild Whisper ladies are based out of Calgary and their products are just gorgeous, can’t wait to play! In the photo below, the Wild Whisper products are in the upper right corner, include the journey chipboard, maple leaf die cut, Canadian stamps, papers and chipboard animals of the moose, etc.  Seriously, it’s all gorgeous.  I will be sure to share the layouts I create these beauties!  I think the ‘journey’ chipboard will be used on my Scotland trip layouts, when I finally get to doing those 😉

Watermarked2(2017-09-29-1601).jpg

In the above photo, the bottom right is all the Illustrated Faith and Vicki Boutin products I bought to put in my Bible art journalling bag.  I played with Ranger Distress Oxide inks for the first time so just HAD to have some, right?  I’m excited to dig into my Bible art again, even ran to Michaels today with the 55% off coupon to get some clear gesso, as I only had the white (rookie mistake on that purchase), as I want to be able to see through it to be able to still see the scripture.

Watermarked1(2017-09-29-1600).jpg

I fell for some other beautiful Canada-themed papers from Treasured Memories, found in the upper left with the Canada tag.  Some Thickers, can never have too many of those with a silver shine!  I also got the dance paper pack at the top right to put away for future dance layouts of the twins.  On the middle left I got a steal of a deal in the pack with the watercolour pencils at 40% off, since it’s from 2015, but who cares?  It’s going to be put away for my favourite craft room friend for Christmas.  I’m going to steal out the mini spray for myself as that will go into my Bible art bag too.  Lastly, the chipboard pile in the centre bottom.  From Scrap & Bean, I think since that was the card in the bag, so hopefully I didn’t mix things up, the brand is Southern Ridge Trading Co.  I have bought stuff from them in the past and here I am again, stocking up.  I got rodeo/cowgirl/cowboys/cows, as well as the create one, first day of school and a dragonfly (for an upcoming Outlander layout, I had to find Outlander there somewhere, right?

Overall, was a super fun scrapbook carnival!  I take issue with the Friday/Saturday, but I get that it runs alongside the quilting expo, and most attendees of that do not work on Fridays.  Each year but husband says, do these people not work on Friday?  I love the shopping, the atmosphere, the friends and the Creative Scrapbooker team, however, having to pay for childcare in order go, makes it an expensive two days for me.  That’s my issue to deal with and next year I will reevaluate it yet again.  I will still go in some form, even if it’s just for the shopping on the Saturday.  If it was just longer days, I’d feel like I get more for my money.  That being said, I’m back to the fact that it is an amazing two days of fun and smiles!! Love you Guys, @CSMscrapbooker!!

Getting started #scrapbooking? #wheretostart

I recently have been meeting lots of new ladies online via my #Outlander fan group on Facebook.  As a result, of course there are many out there that are card makers, crafters, and interested in learning what it’s all about.  Especially with the discovery of the #Outlander stamps that have shared in a previous post: click here.

So when one of the ladies told me she’s love to learn about scrapbooking and where to start, I thought, I need to get back to basics.  I have only been blogging for about a year and am still learning so much and constantly trying to better my creating, posting, social media-ing (if that’s a word) and really hadn’t thought about making sure I cover some very important information, where to start?

GettingStarted.png

So for today I’m going to start with a few basic tips and the most essential basic supplies to get to started recording and scrapbooking your memories, because that’s what it’s all about!

#where to start?

  1. Ask yourself why you want to do this? to make something pretty?  to preserve memories? to create something to be left behind for your children or family?  to enjoy the process?  For me, the answer is all of the above.  Your answer to this is what will inspire you to do this and give you direction on where to start.  If it’s memories, gather those photos and moments that you want to preserve and go from there.  TwinBirth
  2. Understand that you cannot do this wrong!  Everyone has a different style and expectation for themselves.  There is no wrong way to scrapbook.  What you create is yours and creating something means you are that much further ahead that before, right?  Do not be too hard on yourself to start, we all grow and change with the process, enjoy the experience and be proud of what you create!
  3. Gather a few basic supplies to get you started (see my recommended list below).
  4. Create on your own, or with others, again, no rules!  Perhaps you want to do it with your friends, at a class, at a crop (because as a newbie you’ve heard about these things but are not sure what they are all about, watch for a post next week as I’m off to a 2 day crop next weekend), or on your own at home with a coffee in hand.  Do what makes you happy and comfortable in your scrapbooking journey.

enjoy the process

#yourstampinscrapbooker recommended supplies to get started:

  1. Paper Trimmer – Here is our Stampin Up trimmer but feel free to pick one up at Michael’s with a 50% off coupon to get you started
  2. Adhesive of choice – tape runner, glue stick, liquid glue – don’t over think it, I’d suggest a tape runner as it’s the easiest thing to use if you are scrapbooking using photos – Here is our Stampin Up Snail adhesive tape runner (you can purchase refills for this later)
  3. Scissors – A good pair of scissors is important so you get your best creations – Here are our Stampin Up Snips, they come with a cover for the cutting part and are the sharpest best scissors I’ve ever had, I can never go back…
  4. Paper – Do not get overwhelmed by the amount of paper that out there.  I’d suggest starting with some card stock in colours you think are appropriate for whatever you are scrapbooking, ie. winter theme, silvers, blues, very vanilla (like a cream color) or summer theme, yellows, greens, etc.  If you would like me to advise you specifically, please ask! Here is our whisper white card stock (a fancy name for white).  You are welcome to start with some cheap paper from Michael’s but if you have ever touched or used some paper from Stampin Up or other companies, you will easily see it is much stronger.  That personal preference will come with time.
  5. Journally pen and/or markers – An essential piece to any scrapbooking is the journaling.  Scrapbooking is more than just glueing photos to some paper.  It’s about preserving the memories and recording the information that go with the photos.  Whether it’s just the date/place or a paragraph of what happened on that special day including memorable quotes, you will need to write some journaling.  Here is a link to our Stampin Up journaling pens (they come in a 2 pack).

IMG_4621.JPG

That is pretty much the basics, from there you will want to add embellishments, stamps, ribbons, 3D items and grow in your confidence in your abilities to scrapbook.  REMEMBER: you cannot do it wrong!  Enjoy!  Please contact me if you’d like any personal advice on where to start, where to go from what you have already or how to take your scrapbooking to the next level.  Email: janleygrant@hotmail.com

Would love to hear if this helped you at all.  Veterans, did I miss anything?  I didn’t research or review for this post, just wrote off the top of my head, so if I forgot anything , please let me know 🙂

#prayersforirma Thinking of all those impacted and will be impacted #prayersforhouston #highriverstrong

Those who know me, know I’m a huge weather watcher; I’ll chalk that up to growing up in a house where our lives revolved around the weather. My Dad worked for Natural Resources in forrest fire watch and suppression my whole life.  Roomies in uni and after, and now my husband, would find me watching the weather network, like it’s TV show.  Cory actually calls it my “favourite channel” and I’ll be honest, it’s a pretty big staple in this house.  Just this morning, the first thing I did was get up and put it on to see Irma’s progress overnight and more updated images coming out of the aftermath.  I’ve always found something exciting about wild weather and storms.  For sure, I’ve said, in another life I’m a meteorologist.  The upcoming hours and days draw me to my phone and TV to follow the progress of the storm.

So when we hear about storms like hurricane Irma, I feel the excitement, fear and simple awe of such powerful forces of mother nature.  Here is an overhead image of Irma from NASA.

IrmaNASASep9am

We could get into a huge discussion about #climatechange but I’m feeling somber today and I pray for these people, not up for a debate or analysis of climate change.  That being said, as we watched the devastation hit Houston, now the Caribbean, in the form of Irma, and Jose right behind and a third in the Gulf, the whole scene is quite overwhelming and I think we all need to sit back and observe the power of our world.

As a Christian, I feel especially prayerful today and I reflect on how these millions of people must be feeling and how I can only do what I can control and that is to pray for them all to find safety, shelter, and strength in their days, weeks and months to come.  Having watched the aftermath of the High River flood in 2013, the physical was hard, but it was the psychological impacts that are still evident many years later.  People will lose everything, there will be divorce, loss, and fear for years to come.  So I also pray for those that will take others in, help in any way they can, love, serve, and be good people to fellow man.  I saw so much of that generosity after the flood, we even had a friend and little guy stay with us when the entire town was evacuated.  Now, I am by no means comparing the flood of a town of 10000 to that of the millions impacted by Irma, but humans are humans and loss is loss, we all have similarities.

Please join me in prayer for all those impacted and will be impacted in the hours and days to come, and for the recovery effort to follow.  Also, support the Red Cross, either Canadian or American as your disaster relief charity of choice.  I know there are various organizations matching donations so it’s always a great option.

prayer for disaster tragedy

I have been blogging for around a year and have never posted much besides crafting and my #Outlander love, until today.  I really just couldn’t not share my thoughts and prayers today and I sit in my craft room creating with my girls and thinking about how blessed we are to be safe, dry and healthy.  As there was after the High River flood, feelings of guilt sets in because it’s not you.  Please know you are not alone, feelings of empathy and caring are what spur many to serve others and help fellow man.  We can only do what we can for those impacted, donate, pray, serve, love.

#Outlander stamps! #droughtlander ends in 2 sleeps! #yourstampinscrapbooker

2 sleeps! I can tell you for us #Outlander fans, months ago we never thought this day would come!! So what am I doing on Sunday? Going to an Outlander season 3 premiere party, of course!  We are heading to the Kilt & Caber in Calgary and I’m just about counting down the hours!

So what is happening in my craft room to get ready?  Well, if you saw in previous posts, it was in the summer I spotted the Outlander stamp set by Kindred Stamps and didn’t have to think too long on making that online purchase!

Digital Scrapbook Paper
Digital Scrapbook Paper

Was a struggle to get them in my hands, between back order and USPS taking it on an adventure and then Canadian customs, weeks and weeks had gone by and I was just about ready to throw in the towel and they arrived!! Ironically, just the day I was down at the post office asking if there was anything they could tell me, which they said they couldn’t, I came home to find them in the box that same day!  I have to say Kindred Stamps was super good about the issue, they were very apologetic and refunded me all myself shipping fees for my inconvenience.  Really appreciate that, thanks, Kindred Stamps!

So what do you make for book readers, a bookmark, of course!! Here are some play by play photos of my creation and even my twins colouring their own Jamie & Claire!

I used whisper white cardstock for the base cut at 8 inches by 2 inches.  I used our current punch the Scalloped Tag Topper, page 206 in the annual catalogue for my bookmark topper.

Next I used a retired designer series paper called Maritime DSP and I just barely had enough.  I cut that at 7 inches by just less than the 2 inches. I adhered it to the card stock bookmark with Snail adhesive.

IMG_4544

IMG_4545

I used the 1 3/4 circle punch for the sentiment in the middle (from a retired stamp set called Going Global), between our cutie Jamie and Claire. I used a retired scallop punch to matte the sentiment. The sentiment is stamped in real red and matted to a real red card stock.

I punched out Jamie and Claire also using a retired tag punch but you can use many different sizes of our framelits in various shapes.  Above you will see the colors I used for them are as follows:

Claire – chocolate chip hair, dress is night of navy and soft suede.

Jamie – cajun craze hair, chocolate chip belt/pants, basic black boots, and baked brown sugar (retired) on the coat.

There are absolutely no rules on colouring these little guys! I just wanted to share because I was keen to get their hair as accurate as possible.  The rest I just kind of winged it and I chose the Night of Navy because it matched the DSP colors which were real red and night of navy. For the bookmark tie at the top, I used a retired vintage lace but I’d recommend our current products of the linen thread or the burlap ribbon.

So here is the finish product!!

JamieClaireBookmarkJHoleha.jpg

What do you think, Outlander fans? Will my fellow fans at the premiere by happy to go home and add this to their #Outlander collection on their bookshelves?

The twins very much enjoyed Jamie and Claire too!

It’s that time again when I have to sit down and write a priority list of what to do first.  I have so many ideas and things I want to create and start and finish….I’m overwhelmed! But a good overwhelmed, right?  Can you believe I still didn’t finish my December daily from last year?? Yes, it’s still here on the table starring at me.  I’m also trying to organize the 800 photos we took on our UK trip in April and plan for how I’m going to do some traditional scrapbooking of it, and squeeze in a digital book!  That’s only the tip of the iceberg, as they say.  I’ve got the Stampin Up holiday preorder arriving any minute (is that the UPS guy I hear???) which will just add to the chaos!! I’ve also purchased some new drawers from Ikea and hoping to do a swamp out of stuff… it’s hard to purge but will feel so good!

Would love to hear from you all!! How many days to the season 3 premiere? 1 month from tomorrow!!
