#summer2018 #todolists #holiday2018 What’s happening in your craft room?

Happy summer holidays, All!  I know, I can’t believe it but it’s been almost a month since I blogged!! Well, if you’ve read my previous posts, you’ll know that I’ve changed gears a bit and am refocusing my crafty time on me :). That being said, I haven’t cracked my “on-going projects” bin since I was at the weekend retreat in May!!! So what have I been up to?

Travel and family!

  1. Well, July flew by and included an amazing trip to Barbados to spend time with my family from the East Coast!  Here’s a pic of me on the beach!! It was truly gorgeous and am thankful to have had to the opportunity to go!

0c3Jm%V0R76OGyeCWXuUcA

2. While I was away, Cory took the girls down the ranch and on some Saskatchewan adventures with Dad!

3. Then I packed us up and took the girls down the ranch and Olivia off to her first sleep away camp where she didn’t know a soul!  She’s so totally cool with that, she had a blast! The girls and I hit the pool at the Cypress Hills Park as we waited for Olivia which was followed by a full family weekend at the 11th annual Reno Rodeo in Consul!

Summer 2018 continued…

Next up the girls are all off to dance camp next week, I’m going to try and get some things done around the house and dig out the school supplies that  I ordered in June and haven’t opened the box!  I’m hoping to squeeze in some tent camping after that (when it cools down to a more reasonable temp).

Fall Crafting!

I just ordered my Stampin Up holiday pre-order yesterday!! Yes, that inspired me to do this post and get back at it!! I had mentioned in months gone by that I’ve decided I’m not offering a monthly Christmas card club this year, but am working on planning a 1 day weekend Christmas retreat to make 36 cards in 1 shot!  I have never planned a “stamp a stack” before so I’m going to plan the cards and try to post some ideas/samples by September.  Watch for the date to be posted soon!! It will be in November 🙂

IMG_0462

Also, keeping with the me-time crafting theme, I am already planning to attend a retreat weekend the September 22nd weekend with a friend near Cochrane.  I’m have opted out of the Scrapbook Carnival at Spruce Meadows this year, for this full weekend retreat instead.  More time for my money and not need to get childcare on the Friday.  I am still a huge fan of Creative Scrapbooker magazine, and will definitely be stopping by on Friday (on my way out of town to the crop) to shop and say hi!

So what’s on my to-do list… let’s have a look…

  1. Share some crafting love at the upcoming Millarville Fair (August 18-19) – watch for a post of all we submit 🙂
  2. Make new Outlander postcards for #droughtlander – OMG, did I mention the season 4 premiere date has been revealed??? November 4th!!
  3. Continue working on my UK April 2017 scrapbooking album
  4. Finish my travel notebook from Barbados
  5. Laminate and file all the kids’ work and projects that I have piled up from several years in the basement.
  6. Build a new ceiling fan and have it installed in my kitchen (the old one broke years ago and given the 30 degree weather, I really need to get on this!).
  7. Continue planning and working my new project for Christmas – the first annual Integrity kids’ Christmas party!  I wonder if there will be a Christmas card crafting station??? 😉
  8. Dig out and label the kids’ school supplies (not Olivia’s, just the kinder want it).
  9. Go school shopping for fall clothes, including new indoor shoes (this is on the list for next week when the girls are all at dance camp and I can shop solo!).

I’m sure the list goes on so do feel free to give me encouragement to just pick and start!

Anyway, that’s all for now.  Do watch for a Facebook Live of all my new fall goodies when they come, and a SAVE the DATE for my Christmas Card stamp a stack retreat!  If you are interested in more info on the event, please do message me or email: janleygrant@hotmail.com.

Traveller’s Notebook #Barbados #yourstampinscrapbooker

A very special thank you to @kaezmum for taking care of me again when it comes to gathering up a few bits and a super cute traveller’s notebook for me to take on my trip to Barbados!! Not planning anything too fancy for the book, it’s just me travelling and meeting up with some family so mostly planning to use it just as an adorable little journal 🙂 That being said, who can resist embellishing it up a bit??? Going to add some cutesy bits, some papers to a few pages and take my fun pens/markers and washi 🙂

qZ2bZLo+QjCGz5Y9s3uiag.jpg

I have some fun papers that I’ve gathered over the past winter in preparation for scrapbooking our trip to California this past March (and Jenn gave me stuff then too, that I’m still picking away at – I haven’t finished my Cali notebook yet, but will!!!) so I have lots of fun palm trees and goodies to add to it 🙂

What are you scrapbooking this days?  I had told myself I’d get back at my UK album after I came home from my weekend away in Canmore in the spring, and that just didn’t happen.  Between a million things going on, finishing up some card projects for church, teacher gifts for June, starting a learn to run program and now summer planning, there just hasn’t been the time to make my space a scrapbooking mess 🙂 But it will be….

I know I haven’t posted in a while, and had planned to do a separate post to explain why but really no need, here’s the scoop: it’s pretty much because I’m pulling back from my planning for classes, etc.  I think I have told most that I’ve decided to pull back this year from offering classes, I will still be selling, but no longer keeping my website for shopping either (it’s just not paying for itself).  I have made a goal to devote this school year to being all about my projects and what I want to get done for me 🙂 I sometimes can’t believe I’ve been home for a couple of years and still haven’t got many things done in the house (and in the craft room), and probably not in that order, that I would think that I should have.  I have had to work hard to learn to say no to volunteering, I am pulling back a bit from being at the school too.  It’s a tough balance of wanting to be busy, and being too busy, I’ve always been bad at that.  I want to make sure that what I do, I do well 🙂

So I’m planning to continue blogging, to what extent, note quite sure, but I do enjoy using this as an organizing tool to keep track of what and why I did things 🙂 I will do more scrapbooking and posting of what I create for me 🙂

So I hope you are off to a great start to your summer holidays, and will leave you with this:

  1. take lots of photos! try a photo a day challenge!
  2. keep souvenirs and moments to add to you scrapbooks
  3. be sure to journal, in as much detail as you can muster at the time
  4. take deep breaths and enjoy your surroundings
  5. smile, even when it rains, it will be snowing before we know it!

Crop in Canmore Spring 2018 #yourstampinscrapbooker #scrapbookingtherapy #followyourpassion

This year I decided to change it up a bit on my cropping plans.  I have always wanted to go to a weekend away crop in the mountains, so I got on the hunt last fall using all my Googling skills and found Tasha’s Scrapbook Studio and went to work on getting myself booked.  I tracked down some comrades to go with and the countdown was on!! It met expectations, and then some!

I had big plans for all the scrapbooking I wanted to get done.  So where do you start? Well, I went back though the photos I had printed and not used from my last crop (in September) and started a list of what I still needed to finish from that crop, which was all 2016 stuff that I just wasn’t inspired to do at the time.  I started with that.

Secondly, I listed all I wanted to start.  2017 was busy, including our trip to the UK in April, which I plan to have as it’s own album.  I went to town on uploading and printing and got that done in ample time.  If you are new to scrapbooking, and especially to planning for a crop, the most important piece to your prep, is getting those photos printed, because, if you don’t, what are you going to be doing anyway???

I also wanted to challenge myself to pack as little as I could, while at the same time being best prepared for 48 possible hours of scrapbooking.  Next tip: have lots of adhesive!! I went though about 6 refills and was just about on my last one as the crop closed 🙂 I’m not big on getting super detailed in my planning (some ladies will make kits and pick out papers, etc., that’s just not me), that being said, I do try to envision generally what I will need, for example, I select stamps that I might use, as well as inks that coordinate with any themes I have.  For example, my UK album will have lots of greens, browns and reds due to the London colors and the Scottish landscapes so I was prepared for those.  I go through all my papers and ensure I’m taking pieces I have purchases specifically for themes/events and away we go.

Here is a photo of my van packed and headed to the Rockies!

IMG_6176

I started with finishing up 2016 and getting a few key events done for 2017 before moving on to the UK album start which I did get about 6 pages done of that.  Overall, I felt extremely accomplished in what I got done and, more than that, was relaxed, content and inspired to come home and keep thinking about it all 🙂

Here is my work space as I’m working on a dance layout of the twins for 2017. Tasha does an amazing job putting this crop on!  The space is great, lots of table room, comfy chairs, an 80s theme and music and amazing food!!

IMG_6187

We stayed at the Best Western Pocaterra Inn and it was great! Here is pic of my view as I enjoyed my buffet hot breakfast before beginning a full day of cropping!IMG_6198

We were in the basement but the lighting was still perfect, I didn’t even dig out my Ott Light that I had packed.  Ladies came from all over, Medicine Hat, Red Deer, Calgary and more!  We all enjoyed the prizes and fun games!!

IMG_6201

As the crop closed on Mother’s Day, I was a bit eager to get home to my girls, I knew that’d be excited so I was actually the first to leave, if you can believe it???? We would stay until afternoon on the Sunday but I left around noon to spend the rest of the day with my fam and head out for a Mother’s Day dinner with them.  I will soooooooo be going back next year!! She does do a fall crop too, however, that is the weekend of Olivia’s birthday so I will have to pass.  If you are interested in Tasha’s crops, check her out here: Tasha’s Scrapbook Studio.

One last stop before hitting the road home, some yummy Beamer’s Coffee of Canmore!

IMG_6208

My first love is scrapbooking and as I have seen myself spend more and more time on cards, I have had to do some soul searching and make some decisions about my time.  I will be pulling back on offering card classes in order to spend more time on “me” and my “therapy”.  I also have struggling to devote as much time as I would like to my Bible art journalling so that is also going to be pulled more to the forefront of my craft space.

Remember, when you turn your craft into a job, be sure to do what you need for you and don’t forget why you started!  Follow your passion and your heart.

A very special thanks to Tasha for a great weekend! Thanks to all my scrapbooking table mates and to all the new friends I met over the weekend!

Traveller’s Notebook – A new adventure #yourstampinscrapbooker

Off on two new adventures!

Our first family trip to California and Disney and my first attempt at traveller’s notebook!  I’m pretty laid back about this crafty experience, don’t have super high expectations for myself, just like the idea of sitting down in the eve to gather things we have collected, use some post-its where I’d like to put photos, do a bit of colouring and glueing embellishments and reflecting on our day!  I’m hoping this will set up my trip journalling as I usually just take a tiny notebook and write down the day’s events, highlights and maybe the food.  I’m hoping this will allow me to bring home that much more info on our trip to scrapbook in the larger format.  I’m going to try and collect more little moments, write down any funny moments/quotes/happenings to remember and come home with more detail to our memories.

I want to say a very special thank you to @kaezmum for all her help, you can find her on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCXkqN408HxSW6a0ec-Gheg

Jenn was so generous to meet me for coffee and sit down and go through the ins and outs of creating a traveller’s notebook.  She even gave me this beauty with the pineapple on it and a few other goodies to get me started!! She has some great videos on all of her travelling across Canada last year and the notebooks she created!! What an amazing souvenir to have from their six week road trip!!  For longer trips, this would be an awesome way to record as much as you can, because who is going to remember all that fun stuff later?  I’m currently starting to prepare to start to scrapbook our trip to England and Scotland last year and concluding I wish I had journaled so much more detail to the days, a learning experience that I hope to improve upon here 🙂

Here is a photo of a few things I’m taking 🙂

travellersnotebook

What have I decided to take? Because, I can tell you, if my hubby sees me coming with this, I’m going to get the lecture of, “I backpacked for a year with one backpack!”, yes, I’ve hear it every trip! haha So I’m keeping it super simple, and it is only a week, if it was longer, I’d definitely take inks and stamps and would probably invest in one of those little travel printers that Jenn has, but for this, I’m just going to stick a post-it for a photo reminder 🙂

Supplies:

  1. Zip up Bag from Thirty One Gifts – It’s called the Day by Day Case – biblebagIt’s intended for a Bible but for this trip, it’s perfect for traveller’s notebook – If you’d like to order one online, click here and you will reach my friend, Nicky, in Calgary, AB.
  2. Traveller’s notebook – can be purchased online or at Michael’s, there are all kinds out there, I’m not sure exactly where this one came from but Jenn also makes them so there are all kinds of ideas out there.
  3. Faber Castell Gelatos – to add some each color and fun!
  4. Adhesive tape runner – Snail by Stampin Up – click here to purchase online 🙂
  5. Washi Tape – light and simple to travel with and can add so much to the fun – I have a variety here from the princess one to Stampin Up that I’ve collected 🙂
  6. Small post-it notes to stick in for photos and notes to do later.
  7. Embellishments – I’m taking some Disney princess chipboard and some Jolee’s flip flops that are adhesive backed.
  8. Writing Utensils – I’m taking a blue pen, black Micron .08 and a few Faber Castell Pitt artist pens, I just love them, in blue, pink and gold 😉 Take whatever you prefer that is comfortable and fun.

Please comment if you have any suggestions for this newbie to the craft, I’m super excited to dig in and we are counting down the hours now until we head off to the airport.

Check out my online shop here, thanks!

Thanks! Janley #yourstampinscrapbooker

Scrapbooking – Where do I start? #scrapbooking

Time flies when you are busy, sorry for the gap in posts!  This week I was inspired to get back to my roots, scrapbooking…

This year I have started a monthly club of crafters in my Stampin Up club.  The group is a mix of newbies and veterans to the craft.  I have had the pleasure of meeting with one of them that would like to learn about how to scrapbook in order to preserve the memories of her children as a gift to them.  So where do we start?  That is a common question in scrapbooking world, as I know with all the ideas, social media, and products out there, it can be a bit overwhelming in even get started.

I remember when I started in 2005, yes, that’s 13 years ago, I walked into Scrapbooker’s Paradise in South Calgary (which is no longer there) and was so overwhelmed by the size and magnitude of products, I almost turned around and left!!  But my love for creating and my desire to preserve the memories I was making with my boyfriend, and now husband of eight years, pushed me to explore, ask questions, take classes and make many new friends in the process.

So here is an early layout from 13 years ago when I first started out – it’s a process so I enjoy looking back at what I did and seeing how my technique and style has changed over the years.  Firstly, I thought a scrapbook was a coiled book that you just stick stuff in and write with a gel pen!  Oh, how I have come!!! That being said, you can start with whatever you feel comfortable, do not let the information out there and the variety of product, (or Pinterest!) overwhelm you, just keep in simple.  Keep reading for my basic list of getting started directions.

Watermarked1(2018-02-15-1231).jpg

So here I am 13 years later and still doing what I love and sharing that enthusiasm wherever I can!! So when I was asked to sit down and help guide others on where to start, I’m excited to walk through the process.  So as we brainstormed and discussed last night, I decided why not share my ideas/process with the world?

enjoy the process

Disclaimer: These are my words, advice and opinions, not as a rule or of anyone else.

So here is my process and ideas, hope they are helpful to anyone out there that is just starting out.  Also, please feel free to comment below or contact me directly if you need any scrapbooking advice!

Question: Where do I start when I want to make a scrapbook?

  1. Size/Album – Identify what you want to accomplish.  Is it a 12×12 layout to frame?  An 8×8 album or a 12×12 album?  Traditional scrapbooking tends to be creating layouts using photos, papers and embellishments on 12 x 12 paper to insert into an album that has plastic page protectors within.
  2. Photos – Identify the photos you want to scrapbook.  This is my technique, there are others that will start with papers and go from there but my method is always based around the photos since scrapbooking those is really my whole purpose in the process.  There are events or experiences that you take 100s of photos of and picking just a few can be very difficult.  This is why double page layouts exist 🙂 That’s when you create two 12 x 12 layouts side by side and can then scrapbook more pictures and have more room to embellish and journal.
  3. Papers/Embellishments – Pick papers and embellishments (ribbons, chip board, stickers, etc) to match, enhance your photo and memory keeping process.
  4. Momentos – Collect and momentos of the memories you are scrapbooking to add to the layouts.
  5. Journal – Make sure you have a title for the layout and any good scrapbook has journalling on the layouts.  Yes, the picture is the focal point of the layout, but scrapbooking is not complete without some journalling.  Even if it’s just the date, location and any small highlights, it really adds to the memory keeping process for future generations as they get to flip back through the album for many years to come.
  6. Supplies – I will do another post on the basic supplies needed but keeping it simple: scissors, adhesive (tape runner, glue stick, liquid glue, pick whatever you feel most comfortable with but do keep in mind you want archival safe if you are using photos that don’t have digitals or older souvenirs), paper trimmer, and a journalling pen. (Sales plug for the day, I love our Stampin Up paper trimmer, it has a scoring tool attached! Link to my shop, here!)

Get started!!

Here is a layout I created about five years ago, oh my sweet babies, I love having these layouts to go back to.  This layout shows my love of pink, glimmer anything, and is a part of an album in which I created a layout for each month of their first year of life.  This a great souvenir for them to flip through and say, “oh, cute”, to themselves! haha

Watermarked2(2018-02-15-1231).jpg

Lastly, as I have shared previously, a more recent creation (2017) where I have tried to step out of my safe and comfortable style for a more modern layering look.

Scrapbooking Stampin Up style!

Thank you, Mary Haugen, demonstrator out of the United States for sharing this gorgeous layout!! I love scrapbooking with our products but as many of you know, I devote much of my time to my card classes and monthly commitments so MY scrapbooking tends to get put aside for those weekend retreats that I occasionally get to go on, then I put my head down and scrapbook up a storm!!

So when I saw this beautiful layout this morning, I just had to share!! I love the embossing paste and the sale a bration framelits will be a fav in my craft room for years to come so putting them together is brilliant!!

So what’s next?  I think the first priority is to get our Valentine’s done for school and then back to planning my next class using the Picture Perfect suite!!

I’m also here to make myself accountable to a weekly schedule of committing time to reflection and Bible art journalling.  Every time I see the amazing (oh, I will have to use our cut out in my Bible!) I kick myself because I have all this stuff, and just don’t make enough time to do it.  How can I not be making time for God?

Coffee cafe Sampler 12×12 Frame CLASS

coffeecafesampler

Just a quick post to share what is happening in my craft room, I know it’s been over a week since I posted and that was only a shameless post about the dance fundraiser LOL

From the moment I saw this coffee cafe suite I was in love!! Last July I did my first ever summer card class and it was a real hit, click here to see the post from that class!

Then I spotted this framed display creation by a demo in the US, Sherahl A. Weadon, and was sold once again!! I’m not actually sure I have ever done so much with a suite as I have with this one. So my upcoming class is this January 30th where I have a couple of ladies coming to create their very own!  Mine is currently a work in progress, almost done, so I will post it with the template and my class photo after the class has been completed.

Here is a list of the products used (I’m not sure what stamp set she used for the “enjoy”, so that is not listed, as well as the green washi in the upper right corner, my creation will be a sight modification on this one):
